What are the common fouls and violations in the game of basketball
1、Walking with the ball: When a player with a live ball steps once or more in any direction with the same foot, the other foot (called the pivot foot) shall not leave the point of contact with the ground; if the pivot foot leaves this point of contact, it constitutes a violation of walking with the ball.
-
Illegal Dribbling: When a player touches the ball with both hands or allows the ball to remain in one or both hands after dribbling, the dribbling is complete. After dribbling, a player may not dribble again unless he has lost possession of the ball and regained control of it; if he dribbles again, it is an illegal dribbling violation.
-
Punching or Kicking the Ball: A player must not intentionally punch the ball or use any part of the leg to block the ball during a game, or an infraction will be called. If the ball accidentally touches any part of the leg, or any part of the leg unintentionally touches the ball, it is not considered an infraction.
The team in control of the ball at the front of the court must not return the ball to the back of the court during the game, otherwise the ball is returned to the back of the court for an infraction. There are three conditions for determining the return of the ball to the backcourt:
(1) The team must control the ball; (2) After the ball enters the front court, the last player of the team (or the referee) touches the ball before it returns to the back court; (3) After the ball has returned to the back of the court, a player of that team is the first to touch the ball in the back of the court. These three conditions must occur consecutively in sequence.
-
INTERFERENCE SCORING AND INTERFERENCE: When the shot (free throw) is in flight and falling and completely above the level of the rim, players from both teams may not touch the ball. Neither player may touch the basket or the rim when the shot touches the rim, reach underneath through the basket and touch the ball, or cause the rim or basket to shake. If the offensive player violates this rule, the basket is invalid, and the ball will be awarded to the opponent in the free throw line extension of the out-of-bounds throw into the boundary; if the defensive player violates this rule, regardless of whether the shot is made or not, the player who made the shot (free throw) will be awarded a score, and the score will be awarded as if the ball had entered the basket.
-
3-Second Violation: When a team has control of the ball in the frontcourt and the game clock is running, no player of that team may remain in the opposing team's restricted area for more than three seconds.
-
5-second violation: An offensive player must throw the ball out of bounds within 5 seconds; or pass, shoot or dribble the ball within 5 seconds when being closely guarded; and when the referee hands the ball to a penalty player for a penalty shot, the player must take the shot within 5 seconds.
-
8-second violation: A team controlling a live ball from the backcourt must get the ball into the frontcourt (the opponent's half of the court) within 8 seconds.
-
24-second violation: Whenever a player gains control of the ball on the court, the team must attempt a shot within 24 seconds.
